GERMAN PILGRIMAGE TOUR: Program #101

August 12 to 22, 2005
 11 days / 9 nights

Long before efforts were made to unite Europe economically and politically and long before the flocks of tourists, men have crossed borders in order to reach the large places of pilgrimage. At these holy places, they hope to gain a new sense of the message given to them by their belief. The strain and occurrences that they experience on their way there give them more insight. Their experiences at the holy place itself provide many people with new strength and energy for the story they hear of the shrine - the rituals that are held and the praying people - all create an atmosphere in which the soul can open and find peace. Europe is rich in places of pilgrimage. There are large places to which millions make their pilgrimages and there are innumerable regional shrines to which people from neighbouring areas or from the region wend their way.

All these places have one thing in common: They provide spiritual consolation and new strength for living. Experience Europe in the footsteps of the pilgrims!

Day One Travelling from Toronto to Munich August 12, 2005
Munich We meet our pilgrims at Pearson International Airport in the evening for our overnight flight to Munich, Germany. Meals will be served in flight.
Day Two Arrival in Munich; Travelling to Altotting August 13, 2005

AltottingWe arrive in the early morning in Munich where we meet our coach and guide. We continue to Bavaria and Altotting situated between Munich and Salzburg and mentioned in documents dating back to the year 748. It was here that the first Christian missionaries built a baptistery and later the “Chapel of Pilgrimage of the Blessed Virgin”. The chapel square with its extensive lawns encircled by picturesque baroque buildings numbers among the most beautiful squares in Germany.

Altotting has been the most significant place of pilgrimage in veneration of the Virgin Mary in the German-speaking region for more than 500 years. The monastery Church of St. Konrad with the Saint’s reliquary is also a place of destination for pilgrims. Additional sights are the late Gothic Collegiate Church with its treasure vaults and the “Goldene Rossl” (Golden Horse), a unique masterpiece of French gold work dating back to the year 1404, the diorama display with over 5,000 figures, the panorama “Christ’s Crucifixion” and the Museum of Local History and Pilgrimage.

For more than 500 years, people have carried their sorrows, their illnesses, anxieties and problems across the “green mats” of the broad square to the pilgrim’s chapel and left consoled. The late Gothic miracle tablets located in the chapel ambulatory and stories recorded in the miracle books often tell of assistance truly granted. The works of art in the treasure chamber give accounts of peoples' gratitude. And many pilgrims, both young and old, prove day in day out, not only in the candle-lit procession, that faith and hope for heavenly support have not as yet become outdated.

Breakfast and dinner included.

Day Three Travelling from Altotting to Regensburg August 14, 2005

RegensburgA short journey through the beautiful Germany countryside takes us to Regensburg. Here you can sense the breath of two thousand years: a huge Roman gateway, a Carolingian palace, a mysterious Romanesque portal, a Gothic cathedral with soaring spires, Baroque and Rococo features glittering with gold depicting the joy in life. This is how Regensburg presents itself, a city that has escaped destruction, a city to gaze at in wonder.

Visit St. Peter’s Cathedral. The rebuilding of the cathedral was begun during the second half of the 13th century. According to documents, an altar was consecrated in it in 1276 and inside, colourful 14th century stained glass windows survive. The best known pieces of sculpture in the cathedral are the Angel of the Annunciation and the figure of Mary on the western pillars at the crossing of the nave.

The Basilica Lieben Frau zur Alten Kapelle has been known as the Alte Kapelle, the old chapel, for more than a thousand years, a clear reference to the fact that it was once the palace chapel. In the Chapel of Grace, which is built onto the south end of the basilica, there is an icon of the Holy Virgin Mary that is supposed to have been given to Emperor Henry 11 by Pope Benedict V111 at his coronation in Rome.

We will also visit the Basilica St. Emmeram, painted by the ASAM brothers and part of the Thurn and Taxis Palace, formerly a Benedictine monastery, and Schottenkirche St. Jakob, the mother church of all the monasteries of Scottish monks in Bavaria and Austria.

Breakfast and dinner included.
